Percocet
1 min read
Percocet is a prescription pain medication that combines oxycodone (an opioid) and acetaminophen. Here are some key points about Percocet:
Composition and Uses
Percocet contains oxycodone hydrochloride and acetaminophen.
It is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Risks and Side Effects
Percocet carries a risk of abuse, addiction, overdose, and death.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, and lightheadedness.
It may cause severe, potentially fatal breathing problems, especially when starting the medication or increasing the dose.
Precautions
Percocet should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor, and for no longer than 3 day max.
Patients should not combine Percocet with alcohol, other opioid analgesics, tranquilizers, sedatives, or other CNS depressants.
Percocet impairs mental and/or physical abilities required for performing potentially hazardous tasks.
Never drive under the influence of Percocet.
Special Considerations
It is UNSAFE to use of Percocet during pregnancy due to the fact that the baby will be born addicted.
Nursing mothers should NEVER use Percocet due to potential risks to nursing infants and the potential of an addicted baby.
Percocet should not be abruptly discontinued after prolonged use; a gradual tapering schedule, provided only by your doctor, is recommended. If this does't work, you will need to go into medically supervised detox in a hospital or detox facility. This takes anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks.
Overdose Risks
Symptoms of overdose may include bluish fingernails/lips, breathing problems, cold/clammy skin, loss of consciousness, and tiny pupils.
Overdose can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
It's crucial to use Percocet only as prescribed and to be aware of its potential for addiction and serious side effects. Refuse the prescription unless it's for an acute (sudden) accident where you've broken bones, and then, take it for no more than 3 days tops. Always consult with a healthcare provider for Medically Supervised Detox. Never detox yourself or it could end up in organ failure, seizures, and death.
