Oxycontin Dangers
1 min read
OxyContin, a prescription opioid pain medication containing oxycodone, carries several significant dangers when abused:
Health Risks
OxyContin abuse can lead to severe health consequences:
Respiratory depression: Taking large doses of OxyContin can cause severe respiratory depression that may lead to death, especially in inexperienced or new users who have not developed tolerance.
Overdose: When abused, OxyContin is often taken in inappropriate doses or by routes of administration (like crushing and snorting) that change how the drug acts in the body, significantly increasing overdose risk.
Physical dependence and addiction: Long-term abuse can lead to tolerance, physical dependence, and addiction. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if use is stopped abruptly.
Side Effects
OxyContin can cause various side effects, which may be exacerbated when the drug is abused:
Constipation
Drowsiness
Slow breathing
Nausea
Vomiting
Dizziness
Impaired motor skills and judgment
Other Dangers
Infection risk: Injecting crushed OxyContin tablets exposes users to additional risks, including contracting HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne viruses.
Interactions: OxyContin can interact dangerously with other substances, particularly alcohol, other prescription drugs, and even cold medicines.
Pregnancy risks: Using OxyContin while pregnant may cause serious unwanted effects, including neonatal withdrawal syndrome in newborns.
It's crucial to note that OxyContin is a Schedule II controlled substance, indicating its high potential for abuse and the severe psychological or physical dependence that can result from its misuse.
To DETOX off of this drug, you MUST NEVER DO IT YOURSELF or you can die. Contact your doctor for an addiction specialist who is an MD or DO and be safely and comfortably medically supervised.
