Sheltered In His Secret Place
Finding Refuge, Strength, and Protection in God's Presence

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1
In times of fear, addiction, temptation, uncertainty, or deep struggle, the promises in Psalm 91 become a stronghold of hope. This Psalm is a declaration of divine protection and intimate relationship with God—it is not just a poem of comfort, but a powerful call to trust and dwell in God’s presence.
Psalm 91 begins with a condition: “He who dwells in the secret place…” The promises that follow are not for the occasional visitor or casual believer—they are for the one who dwells, abides, stays, and seeks closeness with God continually.
Let’s walk through some of the core promises found in this beautiful chapter:
Psalm 91:2 (NKJV):
“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’
Declaring God as your personal refuge shows an act of trust, surrender, and acknowledgment that His strength is greater than yours and that He extends that strength in you..
Psalm 91:3-4 (NKJV):
“Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
He delivers you from traps and dangers—both seen and unseen. He goes before you. His truth, His Word, is our defense.
Psalm 91:5-7 (NKJV):
“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.”
You are reminded that even when the world around us crumbles or chaos strikes, you do not need to fear. Those who remain in God’s presence are surrounded by His protection.
Psalm 91:9-11 (NKJV):
“Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.”
There is divine assurance of supernatural protection—not only physical, but spiritual, emotional, and mental. Angels are assigned to guard you when you walk closely with the Lord.
Psalm 91:14-16 (NKJV):
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.”
This is God's direct promise to the one who loves Him. He promises deliverance, elevation, answered prayer, presence in trouble, honor, satisfaction, and salvation.
Lesson to Be Learned:
Living in close communion with God—daily, continually, intentionally—invites divine protection, supernatural peace, and steadfast hope. Psalm 91 reminds us that deliverance and refuge are found not by visiting God occasionally, but by dwelling with Him constantly.
Questions for Journaling & Introspection:
How am I dwelling in the secret place daily rather than running to God only in crisis?
What “snares” or “terrors” have I feared instead of trusting in God’s protection?
How can I declare God as my refuge and fortress in practical ways today?
In what areas of my life do I need to start trusting God more fully?
What causes me to truly believe God assigns angels to guard me in recovery and daily life?
Verses for Meditation:
Psalm 91:1 (NKJV): “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:4 (NKJV): “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
Psalm 91:11 (NKJV): “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.”
Psalm 91:14 (NKJV): “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.”
Main Goal Today:
To make a conscious decision to dwell in the presence of God—to talk with Him, trust Him, listen to His Word, and walk under His covering throughout your recovery and life journey.
Closing Prayer:
Abba Father,
Thank You for the protection and promises found in Your Word. Teach me to dwell in Your secret place, to abide in Your presence daily, and to trust in Your strength. Cover me with Your wings, Lord. Deliver me from fear, temptation, and danger. Help me to walk closely with You, believing that Your truth is my shield and that angels are guarding me. I love You, Lord. Keep me safe, keep me strong, and keep me close.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
