The Cost of True Discipleship

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.”\
Luke 14:26
Jesus' words in Luke 14:26 strike hard at the heart. At first glance, it may seem as if He is calling us to literal hatred of our loved ones—but that would contradict His own commandment to love others. So what does He mean?
Jesus is speaking about priorities and loyalty. The Greek word translated as “hate” here (μισέω, miseō) carries the meaning of "to love less than." He is not telling us to despise our families, but rather to love Him more than anything else, including our deepest personal relationships and even our own lives.
To follow Jesus authentically, we must dethrone every idol, even the good and noble things—family, comfort, self-preservation—if they interfere with our obedience to Him. He must have preeminence in our hearts.
This kind of discipleship isn't lukewarm. It's radical. It may cost you relationships, social approval, and even your dreams. But in surrendering everything, you gain everything that truly matters—eternal life, peace with God, and a purpose that transcends the temporary.
Jesus isn't just asking for a piece of your life. He’s asking for all of it.
Scriptures for Meditation
Matthew 10:37-39 (NKJV)
“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.”
Philippians 3:7-8 (NKJV)
“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss... that I may gain Christ.”
Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…”
Introspective Questions
Are there relationships in my life that I prioritize over Jesus?
Do I make decisions based on pleasing others or pleasing Jesus?
Am I willing to surrender my comfort, reputation, and dreams to follow Him fully?
Have I died to self, or am I still clinging to parts of my old life?
Goal for the Day
Take a quiet moment today to evaluate your loyalties. Write down anything or anyone that might be holding a higher place in your heart than Jesus. Surrender them to Him in prayer. Then, recommit your full devotion to Him—no turning back, no conditions, no rivals.
Closing Prayer
Abba Father,
Your Word pierces through my excuses and distractions. Forgive me for the times I’ve put anything or anyone above You — even the people I love. Help me to love You supremely, obey You completely, and follow You wholeheartedly. I lay down every idol and every selfish ambition. Teach me what it means to die to self and live for Christ. Make me a true disciple, one who counts the cost and still says, "Yes, Lord." Keep my eyes focused on eternity with You!
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
