Breaking Free from Debt: God’s Way
Recovery includes your finances—freedom from debt is possible in Christ.

“The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”
Proverbs 22:7
DEVO
Addiction doesn’t just destroy the body and relationships—it often leaves behind a trail of financial wreckage. Maybe you’ve blown your money on drugs & alcohol, racked up credit card debt, have too manyii unpaid bills, or borrowed money you couldn’t repay. Even in recovery, the weight of debt can feel like a chain, pulling you back into fear, shame, or desperation.
But God doesn't want you to stay in financial bondage. Just like He heals your heart, mind, and body, He can heal your money story too.
The first step to freedom is acknowledging that debt is a form of slavery—not punishment, but bondage. That means you must stop normalizing it. The second step is partnering with God to change both your habits and your heart.
Start small and stay consistent. Create a simple budget. Stop impulse spending. Pay something off—even if it’s just $10. God honors every step of faith and obedience.
Ask the Lord to give you contentment, wisdom, understanding, and discipline. And most importantly, surrender your money decisions to Him. Every dollar is a tool He can use for your growth and His glory.
You may not get out of debt overnight, but you can break the cycle today.
SCRIPTURES FOR MEDITATION:
Romans 13:8 – “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.”
Luke 16:11 – “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?”
Proverbs 21:5 – “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.”
Philippians 4:11–12 – “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”
TODAY'S GOAL:
Take one concrete step toward financial freedom today—whether it's making a payment, canceling a subscription, praying over your spending, or creating a simple plan. Invite God into your money and trust Him to lead you to freedom.
INTROSPECTION & JOURNALING:
In what ways has my past addiction or brokenness affected my finances?
How have I truly surrendered my money habits to God?
What financial habits need to change so I can honor God with my resources?
Why does God care about my financial healing as much as my spiritual healing?
What step can I take today toward getting out of debt?
PRAYER:
Abba Father, You are the Provider and Restorer. I confess that I have made poor choices with money, and I don’t want to stay stuck in this cycle of debt and stress. Teach me to be a wise steward. Give me strength to change my habits, courage to face what I owe, and grace to believe that freedom is possible through You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
